Meghalaya
The name Meghalaya literally means the abode or the home of the clouds. Located in the North East of India, it is one of the most beautiful states and also one of the least polluted. The state offers visitors a variety of sights, activities, food, and festivals to experience. It is where the region of Cherapunji is situated. This place is renowned for receiving the maximum amount of rainfall in the world. With its valleys, hills, and pristine lakes Meghalaya has a very postcard-like ambiance. The capital city is Shillong and is one of the most urbanized areas of the state. The city has its architectural roots in British Colonial architecture with many of the buildings of the city dating back to British rule. Shillong is lovingly called the Scotland of the East. One of the most popular tourist attractions is the Living Double-decker Root Bridge in Cherapunji and here tourists can indulge in some trekking and hiking activities. It also boasts of the cleanest villages in India called Mawlynnong. Lying on the border separating India from Bangladesh, Mawlynnong is an impeccably clean village that serves as a benchmark for others. The state is ideal for a visit throughout the year. The major airports are in Shillong and Guwahati in the neighboring state of Assam.
